At some point in our lives, we will all face health dilemmas. The good news here is that we have the capability depending on the ailment, to help prevent and slow the progression of the disease process with traditional and non-traditional methods. When thinking of conventional methods, you probably think of prescription medicines. They play a huge role in helping combat diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, and high cholesterol; you name it. You probably don’t realize that when combined with natural options, your chances of advancing or developing other issues dramatically decrease.
Take high cholesterol; that issue alone can cause many problems for the body. It is linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and so on. High cholesterol can be inherited, but it’s often the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices, which make it preventable and treatable. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and medication can significantly reduce further complications such as a heart attack or stroke. Furthermore, if you know you have a family history take measures to decrease risk by getting tested regularly and knowing your numbers. Your body needs cholesterol to maintain cellular functionality, but high levels are dangerous. Plus, there are over-the-counter supplements that can be useful, such as niacin, garlic, fish oil, etc. but talk to your doctor first before self-prescribing because they can interfere with other drugs and don’t get trapped into taking supplements that have no known efficacy or studies to support their claim.
Another example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). First off, if you smoke, STOP SMOKING!!! Also, avoid secondhand smoke, chemical fumes, dust, and other irritants that cause the airway to react. Prepare for cold and flu season by getting the flu shot and pneumonia vaccine and continue to remain active to mobilize secretions in your lungs. All these measures will help prevent your body from becoming its worst enemy.
Chronic diseases are not a death sentence; they are more of a wake-up call. You can get your life back by simply incorporating basic practices of taking care of yourself. Do your homework and be aware of all your options to determine what is best for you. Consider healing the whole body inside and outside with spirituality, chiropractic care, herbs, supplements, and nutrition/diet; these are all complementary practices. Remember, care should be individualized, and no two plans should look alike because we are all different. You are an equal partner in your healing process. Maintain open communication with all your doctors to get the most out of your treatment plan and start asking questions about adding non-conventional options. It may help you feel your best and what’s not to like about that?
